Peterlee was planned after the Second World War as a new town for the East Durham coalfield, and named after the miners' leader Peter Lee. Its estates were laid out with footpaths, shared green space and open front gardens, and many of those lawns are now ready for replacing.

A planned town and its gardens

The new-town plan gave most Peterlee homes a front garden open to the street or to a shared green, and an enclosed back garden behind. On some estates, including the flat-roofed houses around the Apollo Pavilion at Sunny Blunts, the design was deliberately modern, and the gardens are part of that look.

Decades on, many front lawns have been patched, cut back for drives or left to thin out, while back lawns have done long service as play areas. Replacing them means getting the levels right against paths laid at the same time as the houses, and cutting a clean line where your lawn meets the open green beyond.

What Peterlee lawns usually need

  • Open front lawns

Lifted and relaid, with a crisp edge where they meet the path or shared grass.

  • Back gardens

Worn, bumpy family lawns taken back to soil and started again.

  • Moss and shade

Lawns that have gone over to moss, often under fences and trees.

  • Newer homes

Builder's lawns on compacted ground replaced properly.

Limestone below, clay on top

East Durham sits on magnesian limestone, but much of the ground around Peterlee has a covering of clay that holds water in winter and cracks in a dry summer. Breaking up compaction and adding topsoil gives new turf something better to root into, and makes the lawn far more forgiving in both seasons.

Common questions

Our front lawn joins a shared green. Can you replace just our part?

Yes. We lay up to your boundary and cut a neat edge so the join is tidy.

Do you cover Horden, Easington and Shotton?

Yes, and Blackhall, Castle Eden and the rest of the area around Peterlee.

Can you take out an old lawn that's mostly moss?

Yes. Moss usually points to shade, compaction or poor drainage, so we deal with the ground as well as the grass. See replacing a mossy lawn.
