Whitley Bay is one of the areas we work in most. Bay-windowed Edwardian terraces near the seafront, Monkseaton's 1930s semis and the newer homes towards Earsdon and Shiremoor all have one thing in common: the sea air. We lay lawns that are prepared to cope with it.
Gardens around Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay
Edwardian terraces
Close to the seafront, terraced streets have small front gardens behind low walls and longer back gardens, often reached through the house or a back lane.

Monkseaton
1930s semis
Monkseaton and West Monkseaton are full of interwar semis with long back lawns and neat front gardens. Many of these lawns are original and have thinned over the years.
Towards Earsdon
Later estates
Whitley Lodge, Hillheads and the streets towards Earsdon, Shiremoor and Backworth include post-war and later homes, many with open-plan front lawns that are on show to the whole street.
Coastal conditions
Wind off the sea dries new turf faster than it would inland, and soil near the coast can be lighter and drain quickly in places. New lawns here need regular, thorough watering until they root, and we talk you through it before we leave.
Further inland, towards Earsdon and Shiremoor, there's more clay. There, good preparation matters most: breaking up compacted ground and laying onto a proper bed of topsoil so water doesn't sit on the lawn in winter.
Getting turf in and waste out
Plenty of Whitley Bay gardens are reached through a back lane, a side passage or the house itself. We plan how the turf comes in and the old lawn goes out before the day, and protect floors where we carry through.
Parking near the seafront can be tight, especially on sunny weekends. Tell us about permits or parking restrictions when you ask for a quote and we'll plan around them.
Front gardens that face the street
A neat front lawn makes a real difference to these streets. We take care to set the levels against the wall and path, cut a sharp edge and lay the turf so the seams disappear once it settles.
A typical Whitley Bay turfing day
Old lawn lifted
Tired, mossy or thin grass is cut out and taken away.
Ground prepared
Levelled, topped up with topsoil where it's short and raked to a firm, even finish.
Fresh turf laid
Laid tight with the joints staggered, edges cut clean against walls, paths and borders.
Watered in
We water it in and explain how to keep it damp while it roots in the coastal breeze.
Common questions
Do you cover Cullercoats, Earsdon and Shiremoor?
Yes. We cover the whole of Whitley Bay and Monkseaton plus Cullercoats, Earsdon, Shiremoor and Backworth.
Can you turf a small front garden?
Yes. Small front lawns are a common job here and we take care with the levels and edges against walls and paths.
How often should I water new turf near the coast?
Daily for the first couple of weeks, twice on hot or windy days. Lift a corner and check the soil underneath is damp.
My garden is only reachable through the house. Is that a problem?
Not at all. It's common in Whitley Bay's terraces. We protect the floors and carry everything through by hand.
