Got a patch of bare soil, a cleared border or a garden that's never had a lawn? We bring the turf, prepare the ground and lay it, so you go from soil to a green lawn in a day.
Who this suits
Supply and lay is for gardens where there's no old lawn to lift: ground that's already been cleared, a dug-over vegetable patch, an old gravel area, or soil left after a shed, pond or decking has gone.
It's often the simplest kind of turfing job, but the result still depends on the ground. Bare soil that's been sitting for a while is usually compacted, uneven or full of weeds, so we always prepare it before the turf goes down.
How the ground is prepared
| What we find | What we do |
|---|---|
| Weeds and grass coming through | Cleared out by hand, roots and all |
| Hard, trodden or compacted soil | Broken up so roots can get down |
| Stones, glass and debris | Picked out as we level |
| Thin or poor soil | Topped up with topsoil to give a good bed |
| Dips and ridges | Raked and firmed to an even level |
| Old gravel or membrane | Lifted and removed before soil goes in |
Builders' rubble found under the surface is priced separately.
A few common starting points

After decking or a shed comes out
The soil underneath is usually dry, compacted and short of nutrients. It needs breaking up and often a layer of fresh topsoil.
Old vegetable beds
Usually good soil, but soft and uneven. We firm and level it carefully so the lawn doesn't sink in places later.
Gravel gardens
The gravel and any membrane underneath need to come out first, then topsoil goes in to the right depth.
The turf we lay
Every lawn we lay uses the same good-quality, hard-wearing lawn turf. It suits most gardens and copes with children, pets and everyday use; we don't lay low-grade turf. If part of your garden is very shady, mention it when you ask for a quote and we'll talk through how a lawn is likely to do there. Our guide to choosing turf for your garden explains what to look for.
Common questions
Can I prepare the ground myself and just have the turf laid?
Yes. Tell us in your quote request what you've done. We'll check the ground on the day and let you know if anything needs finishing before we lay.
Do I need topsoil?
Often, yes. Most bare ground benefits from a fresh layer, especially after building work or where the soil is thin. Your quote will say how much.
Can you lay turf on clay?
Yes, with the right preparation. Breaking up the surface and adding topsoil gives the roots a better start than laying straight onto heavy clay.
