Seaham is a harbour town on the Durham coast, known for its beaches and the sea glass that washes up on them. Housing ranges from older terraces near the harbour to large estates and a great deal of newer building, some of it on land once used by the collieries.

Clifftop gardens and coastal wind

Much of Seaham sits on high ground above the sea, and gardens near the cliffs get the full force of the wind. New turf dries out far more quickly in those conditions, so watering in the first weeks needs to keep up, even on days that don't feel warm.

The coast here is on magnesian limestone. In places the soil over it is thin and drains fast; elsewhere there's a layer of clay. We check what's under your old lawn and add topsoil where the existing layer is too shallow for turf to root deeply.

Helping new turf through a Seaham summer

  • Water early or late in the day, when less is lost to wind and sun
  • Give it a thorough soak rather than a light sprinkle
  • Check the edges, which dry first, and give them a little extra
  • Keep children and dogs off until the roots have taken hold
  • Read signs your new turf needs water

Old Seaham and new Seaham

Terraces and older estates

Older streets near the harbour and in Dawdon and Parkside have terraced houses and semis with yards and modest lawns. The work is usually lifting a worn lawn or replacing a hard yard surface, and making the new grass sit neatly against walls and paths.

New-build streets

A lot of new housing has gone up around Seaham in recent years. Like new builds everywhere, many come with turf put down quickly onto compacted ground with little topsoil. If yours has been yellow, patchy or waterlogged since day one, the fix starts below the surface; see new-build gardens.

Common questions

Does salt in the air affect a new lawn?

Gardens right on the clifftop can see some scorching after strong onshore winds, but across most of Seaham drying wind is the bigger concern. Generous watering in the early weeks is the answer.

Do you cover Murton and New Seaham?

Yes, along with Dawdon, Seaton and the rest of the Seaham area.

Our new-build lawn has gone yellow. Can it be saved?

Sometimes a struggling lawn just needs water, but if the ground underneath is compacted it's often better to start again. Our guide to yellowing new turf helps you work out which.
