Small lawns behind terraces and flats bring their own challenges: walled yards, back-lane gates and gardens you can only reach through the house. We plan around all of that.
Tyneside gardens are their own thing
A lot of Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields was built as terraces and Tyneside flats, with small walled yards backing onto a lane. Many have been opened up into little lawns over the years, and plenty of front gardens are no bigger than a parking space.
Small doesn't mean simple. With a small lawn, every edge shows, levels matter more because paving is close by, and getting turf in and waste out can take more thought than the laying itself.
How we handle access

Back-lane gates
Where there's a lane behind, turf comes in and waste goes out that way, keeping it away from the house altogether.

Through the house
If the hall is the only way in, we put down dust sheets and carry rolls through carefully, with lifted turf bagged on the way out.

Steps and narrow passages
Rolls are carried by hand and soil moved in bags, so tight spaces aren't a problem.

On busy streets and permit zones, let us know the parking situation so we can plan where to unload.
Getting the details right on a small lawn
On a small lawn we pay particular attention to how the turf meets paving, walls and borders. Edges are cut tight and straight, and the soil is set so the finished lawn sits just below paths for easy mowing.

Front gardens
Front lawns are often small, sloping slightly towards the pavement and edged by a low wall. We level them carefully so rain runs off evenly and the lawn looks neat from the street.
Landlords and rental properties

Can you carry turf through my house?
Yes, if that's the only way in. We protect the floors along the route and bag lifted turf on the way out.
Is a lawn worth it in a small yard?
Many people love a small square of grass for children or pets. In deep shade, a smaller lawn with paving around it may suit better; we'll talk it through.
