Hebburn sits on the south bank of the Tyne between Jarrow and Gateshead. Away from the old shipyard frontage you'll find Tyneside flats, Victorian and Edwardian terraces, inter-war semis, the later streets of Hebburn New Town and a scattering of newer homes.
Hebburn's garden types

Flats and terraces
Close to the river, older streets of flats and terraces have compact yards and small front gardens behind low walls. A small lawn here relies on good levels: it has to sit just right against steps, door thresholds and paving so water runs away from the house.
Semis with longer gardens
Inter-war and post-war semis give Hebburn some generous back gardens. Many have lawns that have been patched and reseeded for years and have ended up uneven and weedy. Taking them back to bare soil and starting again gives a flat, even surface that's far easier to mow.
Newer homes
More recent housing in the town has the familiar new-build problem of turf laid on compacted subsoil. Breaking that up and adding topsoil is the difference between a lawn that struggles and one that roots properly.
Clay, drainage and the Tyne
Much of Hebburn is on heavy clay, which holds water through the winter and sets like brick in a dry summer. New turf copes with both if the ground beneath it has been loosened, levelled and given a proper layer of topsoil. Skipping that step is one of the most common reasons a new lawn goes downhill within a year or two.
Gardens on lower ground can be slow to drain after heavy rain. If puddles hang around on your lawn, tell us, and we'll look at the levels and whether anything extra is worth doing before turf goes down.
Hebburn FAQs
Can you lay new turf straight over our old lawn?
We don't. Turf laid over old grass roots poorly and goes patchy, so the old lawn is lifted and taken away first. Here's why we never turf over old grass.
Do you cover all of Hebburn?
Yes, from the riverside streets to the newer homes on the south side.
Our back garden floods in winter. Is a new lawn worth it?
It can be, but drainage comes first. We'll look at what's causing it and say what we'd suggest before you decide.
