East Newcastle is the home of the Tyneside flat, with its walled yard and back lane. Small lawns here make a big difference, and we turf them just as carefully as large ones.

Tyneside flats and yards

Heaton's terraced streets are mostly Tyneside flats: upstairs and downstairs homes sharing a terrace, each with its own yard or a split garden at the back, opening onto a lane. Many yards have been turned into small lawns, and they're among our most common jobs in this part of the city.

Further east, Walker and Walkergate have interwar and post-war semis and terraces with front and back lawns, and the ground is usually heavy clay.

How a small yard lawn comes together

In from the lane

Turf, topsoil and tools come in through the yard gate, and lifted turf or old gravel goes out the same way.

Levels against the paving

Most yards have paving or a path around the lawn. We set the soil so the turf sits neatly just below it.

Shade from yard walls

High yard walls cut out sun. Where the lawn gets only a few hours of light, careful levelling, a slightly longer cut and lighter wear help it along.

Rentals and student houses

Heaton has a lot of rented homes. If you're a landlord, a fresh lawn in the yard between tenancies helps a property look cared for. Choose Landlord on the quote form and tell us how we get access.

Walker and High Heaton family gardens

The semis and ex-council homes around Walker, Walkergate and High Heaton often have a decent lawn front and back, with a side path. These are usually straightforward replacements: old lawn out, clay loosened, topsoil where it's thin, new turf down. Most are finished within a day.

Common questions

Is my yard too small for turf?

No yard is too small. Even a few square metres of lawn can be laid neatly.

My yard is gravel. Can you turf it?

Yes. The gravel and any membrane come out, topsoil goes in and the turf is laid on top.
