Consett was built on steel, and since the works closed in 1980 much of the land has been reclaimed, a lot of it for new homes. Around that newer housing are Victorian streets in Blackhill and Shotley Bridge, estates in Leadgate, Moorside and Delves Lane, and gardens exposed to weather coming off the Pennine moors.

Consett's three kinds of garden

Old turf cut out and rolled onto a tarp beside a barrow and spade, leaving bare ground to prepare

New homes on reclaimed ground

Housing built on former industrial land often has more going on underneath than a typical garden: stony fill, compacted layers and a thin covering of topsoil. If your lawn has been patchy since you moved in, the ground is usually why. Digging into it before turfing tells us how much needs to come out or go in.

Victorian Blackhill and Shotley Bridge

Shotley Bridge in particular has large stone houses with long, mature gardens dropping towards the Derwent. Expect trees, shade, old walls and slopes. These lawns take more planning, but they're some of the most rewarding to replace.

Estates around the town

Leadgate, Moorside, Delves Lane and the other estates have family houses with front and back lawns that are often worn, mossy or bumpy after years of use. A full replacement on loosened, levelled ground is usually the most lasting fix.

Rubble, stone and what's under the grass

When an old lawn comes up in Consett, it isn't unusual to find bricks, stone or builders' waste just below the surface. Small amounts are picked out as we go. Larger amounts of rubble are cleared and priced separately, and we'd agree that with you before doing it.

Our guide to clearing builders' rubble explains how that works.

How a Consett lawn goes in

  1. Check the ground

We dig into the old lawn to see what's beneath it.

  2. Lift and clear

Old turf, stones and debris taken away.

  3. Rebuild the base

Fresh topsoil spread and levelled, with extra where the old layer was thin.

  4. Lay the turf

Rolls butted tight together and trimmed to every edge.

  5. Water in

A deep soak to start, then regular watering, more on windy days.

Consett FAQs

We're on a newer estate and the lawn has never grown well. Why?

Usually because of the ground underneath: compacted, stony or with too little topsoil. Replacing the turf without fixing that rarely works, so the base is put right first.

Is Shotley Bridge included?

Yes, along with Castleside, Medomsley, Ebchester, Leadgate and the rest of the area around Consett.

Does the weather up here make a difference?

It's colder and windier than lower ground, so new turf needs a little extra watering on breezy days, and in winter we keep an eye on frost before fixing a date.
