Extensions, driveways, new drains and skips all take their toll on a garden. Once the builders have gone, we clear what's left, restore the ground and lay a fresh lawn.

What building work leaves behind

Even tidy builders leave a garden changed. Wheelbarrow runs and machinery compact the soil, mixers and materials kill the grass underneath, and there's usually a scattering of brick, mortar and gravel worked into the surface.

A lawn laid over that won't last. The answer is to clear the debris, loosen the ground and bring the soil back to a good depth before the turf goes down.

Typical situations

After...What the ground usually needs
An extensionRubble and spoil cleared, compaction broken up, topsoil to restore levels
A skip on the lawnDead grass lifted, flattened soil loosened and levelled
Drainage or utility workTrench lines topped up and firmed so they don't sink later
Machinery accessRuts levelled, compacted strips broken up
A conservatory or patioEdges made good where the new hard surface meets the lawn

How rubble is priced

Builders' rubble is heavier than soil and turf and costs more to dispose of, so it's always priced as its own item. If we can see it, it'll be on your quote. If we find more under the surface on the day, we'll stop, show you and agree the cost before going on.

If your builder is still on site, it's worth asking them to take away their own spoil and hardcore first. Whatever is left, we'll deal with.

Timing it with your build

The best moment is once the heavy work is finished and nobody needs to cross the garden with barrows. If there are still a few jobs to do, such as fitting a back door or painting, tell us so we can plan around them.

Common questions

Will you take away the builders' rubble?

Yes. It's priced separately from the rest of the job because of the extra disposal cost.

The trench where the drain went in keeps sinking. Can you fix it?

Yes. We top it up and firm it in layers before turfing so it settles evenly with the rest of the lawn.

Can you match the new lawn to the old one?

If part of your old lawn survived, we can turf the damaged area only. New turf looks greener at first and blends in over a season.
