Chester-le-Street is a busy market town on the River Wear, with homes spreading up the hillsides on both sides of the valley. Plenty of people here commute to Newcastle or Durham, and the town's estates are full of family gardens.

Family lawns on the hillside estates

Much of the town's housing is on estates built from the 1960s onwards, climbing the slopes away from the river. Gardens tend to be a reasonable size, front and back, and many lawns are worn out after years of football, trampolines and dogs.

Because the estates are on rising ground, plenty of gardens slope, sometimes gently and sometimes enough to need levelling before a lawn will sit properly. We'll tell you which when we price it.

Near the Wear and the Cong Burn

Low-lying ground near the river, and along the Cong Burn that runs through the middle of town, can be wet after heavy rain. Gardens there benefit from careful levelling so water runs off the lawn rather than pooling on it.

Further up the valley sides the problem is more often heavy clay compacted by years of use, which needs breaking up before new turf goes down.

A typical Chester-le-Street lawn replacement

  1. Old turf off

The tired lawn is cut out, rolled up and leaves with us.

  2. Clay loosened

Compacted ground broken up to let roots and rain through.

  3. Levels set

Topsoil spread to even out dips and ease awkward slopes.

  4. Turf down

Rolls laid with staggered joints, edges trimmed to paths and borders.

  5. Soaked in

Watered thoroughly, with a plan for the coming weeks.

Questions from Chester-le-Street

Do you cover Pelton, Great Lumley and Sacriston?

Yes, along with Ouston, Waldridge, Kimblesworth and the other villages around the town.

Can you replace a lawn the kids have worn out?

Yes. The worn lawn is lifted, the ground underneath put right and fresh turf laid. The turf we use is hard-wearing and suits families and pets.

When is the best time to turf?

Spring and autumn are easiest on new turf, but it can go down whenever the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. See the best time to lay turf.
