Alnwick is a stone-built market town in north Northumberland, best known for its castle and gardens. Away from the visitors, it's a place of long, narrow plots behind the old streets, family homes on the estates and plenty of new housing on the edges of town.

Long plots behind the old streets

The medieval layout of Alnwick still shows in its gardens. Behind many town-centre buildings are long, narrow plots running back from the street, enclosed by stone walls. Turfing one of these means working along a narrow strip, often with access through a passage or the building itself, and setting levels against old paving and steps.

Out from the centre, Victorian and Edwardian houses have more conventional gardens with established trees and borders, while the post-war and newer estates have open fronts and fenced back lawns.

What Alnwick gardens ask of a new lawn

Weather

North Northumberland is cooler than Tyneside, and gardens near the coast at Alnmouth and Longhoughton pick up a stiff sea breeze. New turf here appreciates regular watering in its first weeks and shouldn't be mown until it has rooted.

New-build ground

Alnwick has seen a lot of new housing in recent years. Many of those gardens were turfed quickly over compacted subsoil and never thrived; breaking up that layer and adding topsoil gives replacement turf a far better start.

Clay and slopes

Much of the ground is heavy, and the land rises and falls around the Aln valley, so plenty of gardens have a slope or a wet corner. We level what's needed and lay across the fall where a slope can't be avoided.

Common questions

Do you come out as far as Alnwick?

Yes. We come to you in Alnwick and the villages around it, including Alnmouth, Lesbury, Shilbottle and Longhoughton.

Our garden is behind a shop or flat in the centre. Can you get turf to it?

Usually. Narrow passages and access through buildings mean carrying everything by hand, which we plan for. Tell us about the route when you ask for a quote.

When can we start using the new lawn?

When the turf has knitted into the soil. Tug gently at one corner; if it holds firm, it's rooting. Our aftercare guide explains the first weeks, and the first mow covers the first cut.
