Bigger lawns around Darras Hall, Ponteland, Morpeth and the edges of the city need more planning: more turf, more soil and a clear order of work. Here's how we approach them.
What changes on a bigger lawn
The steps are the same as any garden, but the scale changes the planning. Turf needs to be laid soon after it arrives, so we work out how much goes down each day and order to match. Larger areas mean more soil moved, more levels to check and more thought about where water runs.
Most gardens are finished within a day, but a large lawn may take longer. Your quote will tell you what to expect.
What we plan for
-
Access for materials
Where turf and topsoil can be unloaded and how they reach the lawn without crossing finished areas.
-
Order of work
Which areas are lifted, prepared and laid first, so laid turf isn't walked over.
-
Levels and drainage
Long lawns show every dip. We check falls and fix hollows before laying.
-
Watering
A big new lawn needs a lot of water. We'll talk about hoses, sprinklers and timing.
Watering a big new lawn
This is the part that catches people out. A large area of new turf can dry out at one end while you water the other. A couple of sprinklers on long hoses, moved through the day, usually does the job. Water early morning or evening and check that the soil under the turf is damp, not just the grass on top.

Paddocks, orchards and odd corners
If part of the area is rough grass you'd like to keep wilder, it doesn't all need turfing. Some people turf the lawn near the house and leave the far end as meadow. Our guide to wildflower areas explains how they work, though we only lay lawn turf ourselves.
Common questions
How long does a large lawn take?
It depends on the area and how much preparation is needed. Your quote will say how many days to expect.
Can you work around a garden party or event?
Tell us the date. New turf needs a few weeks before heavy use, so we'll suggest a laying date that leaves time to root.
Do you need a machine on site?
Sometimes, for lifting or moving soil on larger areas. We'll check access when we quote.
