Bumps, hollows, sunken patches and gentle slopes are easier to fix before a new lawn goes down than after. We even out the ground with topsoil, then lay turf on a smooth, firm base.
Why lawns go uneven
Most uneven lawns got that way slowly: soil settling over an old trench or tree root, worm casts, moles, or ground that was never levelled properly in the first place. On clay, wet patches soften and get trodden into dips.
Small bumps make mowing awkward and leave scalped patches where the mower catches. Hollows collect water. Fixing the levels before turfing solves both.

Look at how the ground falls
We check where water runs and where the lawn meets paths, walls and doors.
Lift the old lawn
So we can see and work the real soil level underneath.
Cut and fill
High spots are lowered and dips filled with topsoil, firmed in layers so they don't sink.
Rake to a fine finish
The final surface is raked level and firm enough to walk on without leaving deep prints.
Lay the turf
Laid tight across the levelled ground, with the joints staggered.
Sloping gardens
Plenty of gardens in places like Low Fell, Whickham, Ryton and parts of Morpeth slope. A gentle slope turfs well: rolls are laid across it rather than down, so the joints don't channel water, and on steeper bits they can be pegged until they root.
A slope can be made gentler with topsoil, but levelling a steep garden flat usually means retaining walls or steps, which is a bigger job. Tell us what you're hoping for and we'll explain what's practical.
Where the lawn meets the house
Soil should never be built up against the walls of your house above the damp-proof course. We keep finished levels below it and slope the lawn gently away where we can.

Common questions
Can you level my lawn without replacing it?
Small dips can be top-dressed a little at a time, but real bumps and hollows are best fixed by lifting the lawn, levelling and turfing.
Can turf be laid on a slope?
Yes. It's laid across the slope, and steeper sections can be pegged until the roots take.
Will the levelled ground sink?
Topsoil is firmed in layers as we go to keep settling to a minimum. A little settling in the first months is normal and can be top-dressed.
