The Danger of the 'Cheap Quote'
Many homeowners ask if they can just lay turf directly onto their existing dirt to save on the cost of topsoil. While it is physically possible, it is the number one reason why new lawns die within their first year.
Why Topsoil is Mandatory in the North East
The native soil in Newcastle and the North East is notoriously heavy clay. Clay contains very little oxygen and tightly binds water. If you place fresh turf directly onto clay:
- Root Suffocation: The new grass roots cannot penetrate the dense clay, leaving them trapped on the surface.
- Waterlogging: Rainwater will pool beneath the turf, drowning the roots and causing the grass to rot.
- Nutrient Starvation: Old dirt has usually been depleted of nutrients by the previous lawn.
Do it right, do it once
We import a minimum of 3-4 inches of screened, organic loam topsoil on every full installation. It acts as a nutrient-rich sponge, encouraging deep rooting and perfect drainage.
