Material Calculation Guide

How Much Topsoil Do I Need?

Don't guess your soil order. Here is exactly how to calculate the tonnage of topsoil required to build a healthy foundation for your new lawn.

The Golden Rule of Topsoil

A healthy lawn requires a minimum of 4 to 6 inches (100mm to 150mm) of good quality topsoil to establish deep, drought-resistant roots. If you are dealing with heavy North East clay, skipping on topsoil is a guaranteed death sentence for your new grass.

How to Calculate Your Requirement

Topsoil is usually sold in 'Bulk Bags' (roughly 800kg to 1 Tonne) or loose by the tipper load. To figure out what you need, use this simple formula:

1. Find your Square Meterage (Sqm): Multiply the length of your garden by the width (e.g., 10m x 5m = 50 Sqm).

2. Determine the Depth: Decide how deep your new soil bed needs to be in meters (e.g., 100mm is 0.1m).

3. The Calculation: Multiply your Sqm by your Depth (50 x 0.1 = 5 Cubic Meters). Because topsoil is heavy, 1 Cubic Meter is roughly equal to 1.2 Tonnes. So, you would need roughly 6 Tonnes of soil!
