Top Dressing a Lawn in Autumn

Want that impossibly smooth, golf-course finish? The secret isn't a better lawnmower; it's a dedicated autumn top-dressing routine.

The Secret to a Perfectly Flat Lawn

Over the years, earthworm activity, freezing, and thawing will naturally create minor bumps and dips in your lawn. This makes it impossible to get a super-low, crisp cut with your mower. Top-dressing is the professional method of slowly leveling these imperfections while giving the soil a massive nutrient boost.

What is Top-Dressing?

Top-dressing involves spreading a thin layer (no more than 10mm) of a specialised soil mix over the existing grass. We highly recommend a 70/30 mix (70% sharp sand, 30% organic loam).

The Autumn Application

Autumn is the perfect time for this. After aerating and scarifying your lawn to remove moss, you shovel the top-dressing onto the grass and use a stiff broom or a specialised 'lute' to work the sandy mixture deep into the grass canopy.

The sand filters into the aeration holes to permanently improve drainage, while the organic loam settles into the minor dips and hollows, leveling the surface perfectly. Within a few weeks, the grass grows fiercely through the dressing, leaving you with an incredibly smooth, vibrant lawn.
