The Best Defense Against Weeds
Grass has a lifespan. Over several years, individual grass plants naturally die off, especially after a harsh winter or a scorching summer. This leaves your lawn looking thin and patchy. If you leave bare soil exposed, weed seeds will land and take over. The solution is overseeding.
The 4-Step Overseeding Process
- 1. Scarify the Base: You must aggressively rake out the dead grass and moss (thatch) so the new seeds can physically touch the bare soil.
- 2. Choose the Right Seed: Don't use cheap garden center seed. Buy a premium perennial ryegrass/fescue mix that matches the wear-and-tear level of your garden.
- 3. Spread and Feed: Scatter the seed evenly across the lawn at roughly 35 grams per square meter. Apply a pre-seeding fertilizer at the same time to give the new plants a massive nutrient boost.
- 4. Top-Dress and Water: Lightly brush a very thin layer of topsoil over the seeds to hide them from birds, and keep the lawn consistently damp for 14 days until germination occurs.
