Not All Dirt is Created Equal
When you go to a garden center, you will see bags labeled 'topsoil', 'loam', and 'compost'. Using the wrong one beneath your new turf will completely destroy its ability to drain water and absorb nutrients.
What is Screened Topsoil?
'Screened' simply means the soil has been pushed through a giant mechanical sieve to remove rocks, roots, and debris. Usually, a 10mm or 20mm screen is used. You absolutely must use screened soil under turf, or the hidden rocks will create a bumpy, uneven surface.
What is Loam?
Loam is the holy grail of soil. It is a specific texture made of roughly 40% sand, 40% silt, and 20% clay. This perfect balance means it drains water easily (thanks to the sand) but retains enough moisture and nutrients (thanks to the clay) to feed the grass roots. If you use pure compost, it will rot away and your lawn will sink. If you use pure sand, the grass will starve.
The Perfect Foundation
We import massive quantities of premium, 10mm-screened sandy loam for our installations. It provides the ultimate base for farm-fresh turf to anchor quickly and permanently.
