The Designated Toilet Zone
The only foolproof way to keep a family lawn completely free of yellow nitrogen burns is to train your dog to only use a specific, designated area of the garden. This sounds difficult, but dogs are creatures of habit and respond quickly to consistent training.
Setting Up the Zone
- Pick a Spot: Choose a hidden corner of the garden or a specific strip of gravel/bark chippings. Do not use grass for this area.
- The Leash Method: For the first two weeks, you must take your dog out to the garden on a leash every time they need the toilet. Walk them directly to the designated zone and stand there until they go.
- High-Value Rewards: The second they use the correct area, praise them heavily and give them a high-value treat (like a piece of chicken). They will quickly associate that specific area with a massive reward.
If there is an accident on the main grass, you must immediately drench the area with a watering can to dilute the nitrogen before it burns the turf. Never punish the dog for accidents, simply reinforce the correct zone!
