The Standard Calculation
Turf is sold by the Square Meter (Sqm). To find out how many rolls you need for a standard square or rectangular lawn, you simply measure the maximum length and the maximum width in meters. Multiply them together. (e.g., 8m long x 6m wide = 48 Sqm).
Dealing with Curves and Angles
If your garden is circular or L-shaped, measuring gets tricky. The golden rule is: Always measure it as a massive rectangle. Take the absolute widest point and the absolute longest point and multiply them. Yes, this means you will calculate an area larger than your actual grass, but because you have to cut the turf to fit the curves, you will generate waste. This method ensures you have enough grass to cover the whole shape.
The 5% Contingency
Always add 5% to your final number. Turf rolls can occasionally tear during handling, and off-cuts are inevitable. Being two rolls short is a disaster; having two spare rolls is peace of mind.
