Mushrooms on New Turf: Good or Bad?

You woke up to a lawn covered in little brown toadstools. Before you reach for the chemicals, read this.

The Sign of a Thriving Ecosystem

It is incredibly common for small, brown mushrooms to erupt across a newly laid lawn, especially if it was installed in autumn or spring. Customers often panic, thinking the turf is diseased. In reality, it is the exact opposite: mushrooms are a sign of incredibly rich, healthy topsoil.

Why Do They Appear?

When we lay premium turf, we use topsoil that is rich in organic matter. Fungi live in this soil and their job is to break down that organic matter into nutrients that the grass roots can consume. When you water your new turf heavily every day to establish it, you create the perfect warm, damp conditions for the fungi to push up 'fruiting bodies' (mushrooms).

How to Remove Them

Do absolutely nothing. Do not buy expensive fungicides. As you reduce your watering schedule after the first two weeks, the topsoil will dry out slightly and the mushrooms will vanish on their own. If they bother you visually, simply brush them away with a stiff broom or mow over them once the turf is fully anchored.
