The Basic Square Meter (SQM) Formula
Turf is almost universally sold by the square meter (Sqm). One standard roll of turf generally equals exactly 1 Sqm (usually measuring 60cm wide by 1.64m long).
Measuring a Square or Rectangular Lawn
This is the easiest layout. Simply take a tape measure and measure the Length and Width of the area in meters. Multiply the two numbers together. For example: 10m Length x 5m Width = 50 Sqm. You will need 50 rolls of turf.
Measuring Circular or Curved Lawns
If your garden is curved or circular, measure it as if it were a giant square or rectangle that covers the widest and longest points. Calculate the Sqm of that imaginary box. Because you will have to cut and shape the turf around the curves, you will generate waste. This method ensures you have enough grass to cover the area and accommodate the off-cuts.
The Golden Rule of Ordering
Always add 5% to 10% extra to your final total. Turf rolls can sometimes tear, and you will always lose some grass when cutting around patios, paths, and borders. It is much cheaper to have two rolls left over than to pay a delivery fee for a single missing roll!
