The Biggest DIY Mistake
Many homeowners, desperate to stop weeds from growing in their new lawn, decide to lay a black plastic weed membrane down before adding topsoil and turf. This is a catastrophic landscaping error that will guarantee the death of the lawn within a year.
Why Membranes Kill Living Grass
- Root Blocking: Grass roots are designed to grow deep into the earth to find water and nutrients. A membrane physically blocks the roots, forcing them to stay in the shallow topsoil layer. The grass will become incredibly weak and vulnerable to drought.
- Killing Earthworms: A healthy soil ecosystem relies on earthworms moving up and down the soil profile to aerate the earth and break down organic matter. A plastic membrane traps them, essentially suffocating the soil and turning it sour.
The best defense against weeds is not plastic; it is a thick, healthy, densely rooted lawn. If the grass is strong and thickly knit, weed seeds simply have no bare soil to land on and germinate. We never use membranes under real grass.
