Weather & Installation Guide

Can You Lay Turf in the Rain?

A light shower is a landscaper's best friend, but a torrential downpour is a disaster. Here is how weather impacts your installation.

The Perfect Turfing Weather

Many homeowners worry when rain is forecast on their installation day. However, a light, steady drizzle is actually the absolute perfect condition for laying turf! It keeps the roots cool, prevents the edges of the rolls from drying out, and gives the grass an instant, natural drink the moment it touches the soil.

When Rain Becomes a Problem

We cannot lay turf if the rain is torrential. The issue is not the grass—the issue is the topsoil preparation.

To achieve a perfectly flat, bowling-green lawn, the topsoil must be dry enough to be manipulated for levelling with rakes. If the soil is soaking wet, it turns to heavy mud. It clumps together, sticks to boots and tools, and becomes impossible to grade smoothly. If we try to level a swamp, your lawn will dry bumpy and uneven.

If severe rain hits during the preparation phase, we will pause the installation and return when the soil is workable, ensuring your final lawn is flawlessly flat.
