Can you lay turf all year round?
Yes. The only times professional turf laying must stop is when the ground is frozen solid or completely flooded with standing water. Otherwise, premium, freshly cut turf can establish itself perfectly in almost any month of the year.
Spring & Autumn: The Sweet Spots
Autumn (September to November) is arguably the absolute best time to lay turf in the North East. The ground is still warm from the summer, but the frequent rain means you barely have to touch a hosepipe. The turf roots quickly and establishes a massive, robust root system over winter, ready to explode with growth in the spring.
Summer: Fast Establishment, High Maintenance
Summer is the most popular time for homeowners to request a new lawn, but it requires the most work on your end. Turf laid in July or August will root incredibly fast due to the heat, but it must be watered heavily—sometimes twice a day—for the first 14 days. If it dries out, the edges of the rolls will shrink and turn yellow.
Winter: The Sleeper Season
Many people think winter turfing is impossible. It is actually highly effective. While the grass won't grow on top, the roots will slowly knit into the soil below without any risk of drying out. Once spring arrives, you have a fully established lawn.
